Here is a list of my annotated links for The Viking World 404.

 

1.       BBC:  A history of the Vikings from 800-1066 AD by Professor Edward James. Includes commentary on Viking raids, affects of Vikings on England& Scotland as well as the Conquests and fall of the last Vikings. http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/vikings/

2.       History of the Vikings: This website details the emergence of Vikings in the east parts of England and beyond by monks who encountered these “sea raiders” on the island of Lindisfarne. 3.       Hurstwic: This site contains a plethora of insights into Viking society and lifestyles. The site includes discussion of subjects ranging from Viking farms to hygiene to laws and legal procedures. 4.       Kidipede: This website features a description of Viking explorers and some of the historic themes of the era. The page is tailored specifically for elementary and perhaps junior high aged kids with the intent to inform them about generic Viking traditions. http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/medieval/history/earlymiddle/vikings.htm

5.       History: the Vikings: This is a simple site which discusses the origination of the Viking name, the Swedish state emerging during the “Viking period” and also the “gods” of the Norse people. 6.       This page contains history of the Vikings, a mythology link, and information of rune stones. Also includes a link to a dictionary and reference book related to the website information. 7.       PBS: Secrets of the Dead: This is a Public Television website featuring the exploration and settlement of Greenland by Erik the Red. Has a link to a video episode about Greenland.

8.       The Norse Discovery of America: This is a very helpful website which has scholarly discussion of the possibilities of the extent of Viking exploration into Iceland, Greenland, and eastern North America. The site contains links to its content which provide very useful information about early Viking exploration. http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/nda/index.htm

9.       The Strong Bow Saga: An interesting scholarly link which discusses Vikings. Has a link which contains interesting summaries of the Norse gods, elves, and dwarves. A helpful website to educate people about Viking heritage and the Viking age. http://www.strongbowsaga.com/

10.   BBC News: Did the Vikings make a telescope?: This site discusses the possibility of Vikings creating the first telescope after a discovery of a lens on the island of Gotland. Interesting suggestion towards Viking inventiveness given the time period.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/702478.stm

11.   Vikings: A Google directory of multiple Viking web pages. Contains links to specific topics in reference to Vikings ranging from historical literature to archeology to Vineland Maps.
