Hjordis is the second wife of Sigmund and the mother of Sigurd the Dragon Slayer. When Sigmund comes to ask for her marriage, she is approached by two suitors, so her father lets her decide which she will marry. She chose Sigmund for, although he was much older, he was more famous and powerful. During the battle between King Lyngvi and King Sigmund, Hjordis is taken into the forest to hide. After Lyngvi kills Sigmund, he could not find her in the castle and left without her. Hjordis was found by King Alf and he married her, regardless of the fact that she was pregnant with Sigmund’s son, and “was thought the most worthy of women” (Byock 55).
